Bishop isn't known for her desriptive or interesting titles. She calls it as it is and titles the poem after its form, in this case "Sestina." It might not be interesting, but the reader immediatley knows what it is. It is typical of Bishop to have a straightforward title paired with a fairly complicated poem. She could have easily titled it something crazy but it seems like she wanted to go for a suprise effect. In my opinion, I think a more suitable name for this poem would be "Dark Tears in September's Cup". Considering it is Septemeber, this title already paints a portion of the setting, showing the time of year. Also considering for the majority of the poem the grandmother is crying, it would only be suitable if the word "tears" or "cry" appears in the title. Throwing in a descriptive word like dark shows the mood of the poem. Saying "light tears" or "happy tears" would not make sense. These are not tears of joy, they are tears of sadness. So using a word like "sad" or "dark", would be a suitable word to represent the tone or mood of the poem. Throw in the word cup to make it artsy and you have a perfect poem title! "Dark Tears in Septembers cup".
