Based on the following passage, why might an engineer want to use a friction pile foundation? The tallest skyscrapers need to be anchored in bedrock, the layer of solid rock beneath any given area’s many layers of soil and other loose material. One of the reasons the island of Manhattan is home to so many tall buildings is because the bedrock is easily reached in many places. However, it is possible to build a tall structure where there is no bedrock by relying on friction pile foundation.

to build a skyscraper in Manhattan
to build a skyscraper in Manhattan

to reach bedrock that is deeply buried

to anchor a building in place in the absence of bedrock

to transform soil and other loose material into bedrock
