Buildings used to be built with what iscalled working stress design. This methodinvolved making sure the stresses experienced by thematerials would not exceed the yield stressso no plastic deformation could occur. Currently ultimatestress design is much more common. This design sets the maximum stress allowable to theultimate tensile stress, which allows someplastic deformation to occur, allowing less materialto be used. If we have steel with a Young's modulus of 205 GPa, a yield strength of 370 MPa, and anultimate strength of 440Mpa. Calculate the area ofa 3 m long beam you would need to withstand106N for each of the two design methods. What is the percentage decrease in the amount of steelused for the ultimate stress designcompared to the working stress design?

Aloaded platform of total mass 500 kg is supported by a dashpot and by a set of springs of effective stiffness 72 kn/m. it is observed that when the platform is depressed through a distance x = 12.5 cm below its equilibrium position and then released without any initial velocity; it reaches its equilibrium position in the shortest possible time without overshoot. find the position and velocity of the loaded platform 0.10 sec. after its release. if a further load of 400 kg is added to the platform, find, i) the frequency of damped vibrations, and i) the amplitude of vibration after 2 complete oscillations, given that the initial amplitude is 15 cm.
