A traffic light controller receives a 4-bit input that changes every 5 seconds. The input sequence is a simple counter that counts from binary 0 to binary 15 and then starts again from binary 0. These signals go to 4 outputs, NSH, NSL, EWH, EWL. The first two outputs NSH and NSL respectively represent the high and low bits that are fed to the lamps that face in the North-south direction. The other two outputs EWH and EWL respectively represent the high and low bits that are fed to the lamps that face in the East-West direction. The following table indicates how setting the high and low bits determines the color of the lamp: High Low Lamp Color
0 0 Green
0 1 Yellow
1 0 Red
1 1 REd
Each light should be green for 30 seconds, yellow for 5 seconds, and then red for 45 seconds. There should be two 5 second intervals when both lights are red. Assume that for the interval where the input is 0000, the North-South light has just turned green, and the East-West light has been red for 5 seconds already. Design the circuitry that feeds from ABCD to the two outputs. You may represent your answer as algebraic equations (make sure to simplify).

An external consultant recommends that a plant installs a bank of capacitors for power factor correction. this will reduce the peak electrical demand charges by an average of 93 kw every month. the plant current pays $13 per kw in peak demand charges. the capacitor bank will include 223 kw of fixed capacitors, and 183 of variable capacitors. the fixed capacitors cost $59 per kw, and the variable capacitors will cost $65 per kw. the consultant charges 21% of the equipment costs to install the capacitors. because this project will reduce the demand for the electric utility, they are prepared to provide a one-time rebate of $42 per kw of reduced demand. what is the simple payback period for this project (in years)?

Apiping systems consists of 6 m of 6-std type k and 12 m of 4-std type k, both drawn copper tubing. the system conveys ethylene glycol at a rate of 0.013 m3/s. the pressure drop across the system is to be calculated. there are two 90° elbows in the 6-in pipe, a reduction from the 6-in pipe to the 4-in pipe and four 90° elbows in the 4-in pipe. all fittings are soldered (same as flanged) and regular. the inlet and outlet of the system are at the same height.

Aheat pump with refrigerant-134a as the working fluid is used to keep a space at 25°c by absorbing heat from geothermal water that enters the evaporator at 500c at a rate of 0.065 kg/s and leaves at 40°c. the refrigerant enters the evaporator at 20°c with a quality of 23 percent and leaves at the inlet pressure as saturated vapor. the refrigerant loses 300 w of heat to the surroundings as it flows through the compressor and the refrigerant leaves the compressor at 1.4 mpa at the same entropy as the inlet. determine: (a) the degrees of subcooling of the refrigerant in the condenser, b)-the mass flow rate of the refrigerant . (c) the heating load and the cop of the pump, and d)-the theoretical minimum power input to the compressor for the same heating load.
