Longitudinal tensile strength tests on an aligned glass fiber/epoxy matrix composite with 0.4 volume fraction of discontinuous fibers with average diameter and length of 0.1 and 6 mm respectively showed that (i) the fracture strength of the fiber is 3.5 x 103 MPa; (ii) the matrix stress at composite failure is 5.5 MPa and that (iii) the fiber-matrix bond shear strength is 100 MPa. Estimate the composite tensile strength.
