Formaldehyde (CH2O) is made by the catalytic oxidation of pure methanol vapor and air in a reactor. The product stream from this reactor contains: 63.70 moles N2, 13.40 moles O2, 5.30 moles H2O, 4.10 moles CH2O, 12.30 moles CH3OH and 1.20 moles HCOOH. The reaction is 2CH3OH + O2 A side reaction occurring is 2CH2O + O2 2CH2O + 2H2O 2HCOOH
