A hydrocarbon feed consisting of a mixture of 20 wt% propane (C3), 30 wt% butane (C4), 20 wt% pentane (C5), and balance hexane (C6) is fed into a distillation column at a mass flow rate of 100 kg/h. The distillate (i. e., top stream leaving the distillation column) contains three species: all the propane (C3) in the feed, 78% of the pentane (C5) in the feed, and the mass fraction of butane (C4) in the distillate is 0.378. The bottom stream contains all of the hexane (C6) fed to the system and the balance hydrocarbons. The process is at steady-state. a) Draw and completely label a flowchart of this process based on the process description above. Provide units for all variables and include all additional information on the flowchart.
b) Do the degree-of-freedom (DOF) analysis on the labeled flowchart from part (a). Specify the unknown variables and "additional specifications" used when doing the DOF analysis. DO NOT write or solve the complete equations.
c) Based on the DOF analysis of part (b), can the unknown variables be calculated? If Yes, proceed to part (d); if No, what information would need to be provided (or assumed) to be able to solve for the requested variables?
d) Write in order the equations you would solve to calculate all unknown process variables. DO NOT perform any calculations.

Two flowing streams of argon gas are adiabatically mixed to form a single flow/stream. one stream is 1.5 kg/s at 400 kpa and 200 c while the second stream is 2kg/s at 500 kpa and 100 ? . it is stated that the exit state of the mixed single flow of argon gas is 150 c and 300 kpa. assuming there is no work output or input during the mixing process, does this process violate either the first or the second law or both? explain and state all your assumptions.
