Henry is a Londoner and politician in the 19th century who is concerned about the state of port facilities for the maintenance and repair of large shipping vessels. He believes that a complete overhaul of these facilities to meet the evolving requirements of ships employing steam engines is required. As he drafts a letter to his friend and fellow politician Reginald outlining what he believes is needed, how would he express the need for civil engineering? “As I’m sure you realize, Reggie, we would need to employ a civil engineer for this project who could properly design and plan the structural and mechanical systems necessary for this task.”

“Obviously, Reggie, what’s needed for this project are the services of a master builder to oversee the planning and design of what these new facilities would specifically require.”

“Reggie, I believe we’d need to ask the chief architect for the project whether a specific person should be required for the planning and design of the structural and mechanical systems of these facilities.”

“Reggie, I don’t know quite how to articulate what sort of person is necessary to oversee this work, but it would be someone with a keen eye for details and a wealth of construction experience.”
