A long, straight copper pipe with an outside radius of 0.1 m and a thin wall carries steam, which produces a very high convection coefficient. The temperature of the water is 151oC. A layer of insulation 0.1 m thick (k = 4 W/m-K) encloses the pipe. Air with a temperature of 1000C blows over the insulation giving a convection coefficient of 20 W/m2-K. a. Calculate the heat transfer rate per unit length of the pipe. b. Calculate the surface temperature of the insulation. c. If the insulation were increased slightly, what would happen to the heat transfer rate per unit length of the pipe? d. If the insulation were increased slightly, what would happen with the surface temperature of the insulation?
