A saturated clayey soil deposit, with H0= 35 ft thickness, is characterized with an initial void ratio, e0, equal to 2.0. To facilitate the construction of a new structure, a 5 foot thick layer of structural fill is placed and compacted with γ= 130 pcf. Following several months, the void ratio has decrease to 1.7. How much settlement has occurred at the ground surface (assume no settlement of the strong, compacted structural fill)?
