-A light source
-A lens or mirror (both is fine)
-A filter of some kind
-A diffraction grating or prism
-A detector of some kind
-A way of showing what is happening when the device is in operation, include phenomena that are not immediately apparent by naked eye observation

Next, write a description and explanation of how your device works and what the expected outcome is. This should include some explanation of what the key components listed above are doing at each step along the way.
