Give a ten-minute speech using a keyword outline and/or note cards.
Evaluate a speech based on a set of guidelines.
1.) Using only your keyword outline and visuals you may have created, deliver your speech to at least ten people (preferably classmates taking this course). Your speech should last approximately ten minutes. Answer any questions that the audience might have concerning the content of your speech.
2.) After your presentation, evaluate your own effectiveness, using the questions listed below. Your evaluation should contain no less than fifty words.
Topic
1.) Is the topic narrow enough to be effectively covered?
2.) Does the speaker project interest in the topic? Look for excitement and depth of information.
3.) Does the speaker clearly introduce the topic?
Audience
1.) Is the topic appropriate for the audience?
2.) Does the audience seem interested in the topic and/or speaker? Look for active listening behavior: eye contact, attentiveness, nodding, and facial expressions.
Evidence
1.) Is the speaker's choice of evidence appropriate (i. e., does the speaker cite relevant statistics, quotations, etc.)?
2.) How is each point supported? Is the evidence sufficient?
3.) Upon what kind of sources is the speaker evidence-based? Are they reliable? Biased? Sound?
Organization
1.) Is the organizational structure appropriate for the topic?
2.) Is it easy to follow the speaker's line of thought?
3.) Does the introduction properly introduce the main points and state the thesis?
4.) Does the conclusion properly summarize the speech?
5.) How much time does the speaker spend developing each main point?
Speaker Credibility
1.) Does the speaker seem credible or believable? Why or why not?
2.) What does the speaker do to enhance his or her credibility? Does the speaker cite experts? Does the speaker explain his or her credentials in relation to the topic?
Delivery
1.) What type of delivery method does the speaker use? Is it appropriate?
2.) Does the speaker's nonverbal behavior enhance or detract from the content of the speech? Does the speaker stand up straight? Does he or she make eye contact?
3.) How do the speaker's volume, pitch, and rate affect the speech's delivery?
4.) Does the speaker properly articulate words?
