This is what I came up with and how i select a function:

Knowing something about the models that have been found to work well in the past for different application types also helps. A menu of different functions on the next page, Section 4.4.2.1. (links provided below), provides one way to learn about the function shapes and flexibility. Section 4.4.2.2. discusses how general function features and qualitative scientific information can be combined to help with model selection. Finally, Section 4.4.2.3. points to methods that don't require specification of a particular function to be fit to the data, and how models of those types can be refined.
