Burn wood in limited or no oxygen supply and in extreme heat temperatures of about 1000 degrees Fahrenheit and what you will get is charcoal. I will not need to get into the complete science of making charcoal but to put it in simple terms, burning wood in the absence of air will give you charcoal. The final result you get when you burn wood to give you charcoal is a dark substance that can be used by artist for drawing. This charcoal can be compressed further to give you a stick of vine or willow charcoal and white or black charcoal pencils. Using pencils made from carbon stick will deliver beautiful grays of pictures and can be used in special occasions to create pictures with very fine texture and tone of blacks. Special 4B and 6B types of pencil that are preferred as much as the 2B pencils.
