When we have a salt and we place it into a solvent, specially water, due to the fact that salts are commonly ionic, it dissociates (breaks) into both cations and anions which could be colored or colorless allowing the solution to be formed. The idea is that if the amount of the salt does not exceed the solubility, the resulting solution will be homogeneous as long as all the ions were thoroughly dissolved and the color will depend on the cation's behavior when dissolved.
