In 1804, the Italian geologist G. Thompson, who was studying an iron-nickel meteorite, attempted to clean the dull patina from it by using a nitric acid wash. Strange figures like
the ones in the photo below soon emerged on the surface. These patterns are now known
as Widmanstätten patterns. These patterns are the result of an extraordinarily slow cooling
(millions of years) of the metal meteorite.
