Ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) was used in the manufacture of inks, most notably iron gall ink,
which was used from the middle ages until the end
of the eighteenth century. It can be obtained during
the reaction of aqueous ferric sulfate, Fe2(SO4)3,
with gaseous sulfur dioxide and water to form
aqueous sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and aqueous
ferrous sulfate.
