Osmosis is the movement of water across semipermeable membranes from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one. CaCl2 (a type of salt - you will learn later that in chemistry, a salt is defined as a metal and a nonmetal) is added to roads in the winter after snow falls. Explain why you think this is an effective method of clearing the roads of snow. Often plants found along roadways are severely damaged or killed due to the use of calcium chloride to clear roads in the winter. Explain why the plants are harmed.
