One thing is for sure, you don't want to catch a superbug in space! In 2006, astronauts
brought samples of salmonella (the bacteria responsible for food poisoning) into the
low-gravity environment of the ISS in order to learn how the amount of gravity affects the
virulence (harmfulness) of salmonella. According to researchers, the space salmonella
was "tricked" into behaving as if it were in the human gut, causing it to become 3 to 7
times more virulent than Earth salmonella. Yikes!
