for this one its hard. if i was in that situation i would just confess over text cause im too much of a pússy to do it irl LMAÓ but it is really all what you want to do. like if they show signs of liking you then go for it definitely :D even if not if you want to then try and do it, if they  dont like you back , if they are a good friend i doubt they would get mad or anything
