What is Genetic Engineering?  

Genetic Engineering is the process of changing the DNA in an organism’s genome. It can also mean taking DNA from another organism and combining it with the DNA of that individual. It is used by scientists to enhance/modify the characteristics of an organism.

How does it work?

An example of this is insulin, a protein that helps regulate  the sugar levels in out blood. Insulin is normally produced in the pancreas, but in people with type one diabetes, there is a problem with producing insulin. People with diabetes have to inject insulin to regulate their blood sugar levels.

Am I for or against GMOs?  

I am neutral about the use of genetic engineering. GMO’s can be super beneficial in some ways, but in other, it can be harmful.

Benefits:

Agriculture

> Plants can have a higher extreme weather tolerance

> Can be used on different foods such as rice to raise the amount of vitamin A  

>  More productive farm animals [ Genes might be inserted into cattle to raise their milk yield ]  

Human Health

> Used for vaccines and medicines

> Identification of allergenic genes

Drawbacks:  

Environment

> The genes might end up in unexpected places  

> Can mutate with a harmful effect  

> Can have a negative impact on birds, insects, and other living creatures
