Scenario: (This is for questions 7-12) One January day when it was 10 degrees F outside, an Uncle went to Safeway to collect a bouquet of balloons for his nieces birthday. He ordered a mix of latex balloons in various colors. He appreciated the warmth of the store. He watched the balloons get inflated and noticed they were full and taut with Helium. He took the balloons home. When he got to his nieces' house he noticed the balloons were sunk in and wrinkled and floating ½ way down to the floor of his car. He was so disappointed. He placed them in the back room until the party. The house was 74 degrees. The party began an hour later and when he went back into the room to retrieve the deflated balloons, much to his relief, they were full and taut as before. He wondered what could have caused this reversal?
Question:
What is your hypothesis as to why the Uncle saw these changes in the balloons?

Suppose a pair of chemical compounds a and b can react in two different ways: a + b -> c reaction 1 gives product c. a + b -> d reaction 2 gives product d. the following facts are known about the two reactions: . reaction 1 is endothermic and reaction 2 is exothermic. if a reaction vessel is charged (filled) with a and b , then at first d is produced faster than c. use these facts to sketch a qualitative reaction energy diagram for both reactions. note: because these sketches are only qualitative, the energies don? t have to be exact. they only have to have the right relationship to each other. for example, if one energy is less than another, that fact should be clear in your sketch.

The allotropes of carbon include a variety of structures that include three-dimensional tetrahedral lattices, planes of hexagonal rings, cylindrical tubes of hexagonal rings, and spheres of five- and six-membered rings. similar shapes of network covalent atomic solids are possible with carbon nitride, boron, and pure silicon (e.g., silicene is a graphene-like allotrope of pure silicon). in contrast, silicates exist as either highly ordered or amorphous (more random) three-dimensional lattices. what could explain why there are there no naturally occurring sheets, stacked sheets, cylindrical tubes, or spheres of network covalent atomic solids composed of silicon and oxygen (sio2)? would pure silicate structures make good lubricants or good electrical conductors?
