State two characteristics shared by elements of the same group in the periodic table

Group One has only one valence electron and its much easier to lose one then gain seven. Group 17 have seven Valence electrons which makes  it easier to gain one than lose seven. Explanation: I think this is the answer I might be incorrect though.
