Chlorobenzene(l) is produced by reacting benzene(l) initially at 30°C with Cl2(g) initially at 30°C in a batch reactor using AlCl3 as a catalyst. HCl(g) is a byproduct. During the course of the reaction, the temperature increases to 50°C. To avoid dichlorobenzenes, conversion of benzene is limited to 30%. The NIST WebBook reports the heats of formation for liquid benzene and chlorobenzene at 25°C as 49 kJ/mol and 11.5 kJ/mol, respectively.
