Transition dipoles and selection rules. do not do any actual integrals in this question! use (careful) symmetry arguments, where you examine the form of the transition density, which reduces to the product of the initial and final orbitals for a single orbital transition. (a) is an electronic transition from the 2px β†’ 2py levels of the hydrogen atom allowed by the dipole selection rule? (b) make a careful drawing of the transition density in the Ο€β†’Ο€* transition ofa carbonyl group. does it have dipole character and if so what is its direction relative to the co bond of the group?
