The advantages are:

1. It ensured enthusiastic, cooperative, and loyal supporters during the election

2. Since people would be heavily involved in the election, it is really hard for a certain group of lobbyist to influence the election.

These advantages exist because In spoil system, an elected candidate is allowed to give some sort of reward for the supporters who vote for him/her. (such as giving them jobs or tax cuts). Because there is a real and direct incentives, people would most likely willing to put extra efforts so their candidate would win.
