In August of 2020, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) proposed freezing requirements for new cars and trucks at least through 2026. If approved, the industry-wide standard would be an average fuel economy of 37 miles per gallon (as opposed to the Obama-era rule adopted in 2012 that called for an average of 46.7 by 2026). But even with this new lower standard, how many of the cars currently on the market actually meet or exceed this proposed threshold
