If bailments did not exist, society would not be able to differentiate property ownership from possession.

Explanation:

Under a bailment, possession of a property is transferred to a non-owner. English Common Law recognizes the right of a person to possess a thing without owning the thing. This right enables certain transactions to be conducted without the creation of legal ownership.  While the bailor delivers the article, the bailee receives the article.  The bailee can hold the article for the sole benefit of the bailor, for the joint benefit of the bailor and the bailee, or for the sole benefit of the bailee.
