Sam is working with Sandy on a homework problem and reports reading that in a typical cell, the density of protein per unit volume in the cytoplasm is P = 0.15 mg/cm3. The homework asks them to estimate, "How much protein is there in the cytoplasm of a cell with volume 10-8 cm3?" Sandy says: "If you look at P, the cm3 is on the bottom of the fraction, so volume is on the bottom and we should divide by 10-8" Sam says:"But the bigger the cell is, the more protein it has, so we should multiply by 10-8."
A. Who is right-Sam or Sandy

options: Sam, they are both wrong, Sandy, or the truth lies somewhere in between

B. Do you think Sam reported the value of P correctly?

options: Yes, there is no way to tell, no it's way too big, or no its way too small

C. Explain your reasoning for both parts (a) and (b)

D. A cell's volume is mostly filled with cytoplasm (C). Its surface is covered by a membrane (M). If a cell grows in size in needs to accumulate more of the molecules from which both C and M are built.
