If you want to know the strength of an earthquake, refer to a Mercalli intensity scale. It is a seismic scale that is meant to measure the intensity of an earthquake, and the effects that the earthquake leaves behind. The strength, or the intensity is usually measured by the magnitude of an earthquake and on its first observed effects. Do not confuse Mercalli intensity scale with Richter magnitude scale as it defines the size of an earthquake.
