Soapberry bugs (Jadera haematoloma) feed most effectively when the length of their “beak” closely matches the depth within the fruits of the seeds they eat. Scientists measured beak lengths in soapberry bug populations in southern Florida feeding on the native balloon vine. They also measured beak lengths in populations in central Florida feeding on the introduced goldenrain tree, which has a flatter fruit shape than the balloon vine. You will compare the measurements taken by the researchers to those of museum specimens collected in the two areas before the goldenrain tree was introduced. Results are displayed graphically to the right. Describe the findings for beak length of J. haematoloma on the two plant varieties. Be sure to draw comparisons with the museum- specimen average for each population.
