Why and When does Big Joe stage his own funeral?

If he canceled his insurance he would get a check from the insurance company for eighteen thousand dollars. So Big Joe canceled his insurance and sure enough, two weeks later, he was telling everybody that the check came just like he though it would. That's when he decided to have the funeral.
