These plants are covered in aphids which are the prey of ladybirds. In turn, the ladybirds, together with the locusts, are eaten by shrikes (butcher-birds). The rat and mice populations are kept under control by the presence of the hawks and owls, the latter of which are nocturnal. The decomposers, the last trophic level in the food chain, release the nutrients back to the soil. 2.1.
