Part A: Dump the sand along one side of the pan and form a shoreline, as shown in the image. If you are using food coloring, add a few drops to your oil and mix thoroughly. Pour the oil in the middle of the ocean you created, and write down what you observe. Part B: Dip both bird feathers in the oil, completely immersing them. Record how the appearance and weight of the feathers change because of the oil. Also, predict what will happen when you try to clean off the feathers by dipping them in hot or cold water.
Part C: Dip one feather in hot water and the other in cold water. Swirl both feathers around for 20 seconds and remove them. Write down any changes you see in the amount of oil on the feathers.
Part D:To simulate ocean waves, start gently pushing the water to the shore using a spatula. Record how the oil moves in the water and what happens to the shoreline.
