One of the chemical changes in the oceans is its constant acidification process, generated by the absorption of almost a third of the carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels and the clearing of forests. The consequence of this is that the acidity level increases by 30%, which depletes the calcium carbonate ions in the water.
Scientists have carried out experiments in the laboratory to prove that lowering the pH has an effect on the behavior and activity of some organisms. The table shows their results.
Researchers have found that most of the crustaceans have three-layered shells. The innermost is nacre, composed of layers of chitin and aragonite crystals. The intermediate and thickest layer is the mesostracus, made up of calcium carbonate crystals and, finally, the thinnest layer is the periostrachus, made up of a substance similar to keratin.
Based on the above, What problem would ocean acidification cause in crustaceans?
*Squid: calamar *krill: krill *Immersive Reader
(1 Point)
A . shells would not detect predators in the ocean.
B . shells would have an acidic pH like that of the ocean.
C . shells would be weak as only two of their layers were formed.
D. shells would become harder and their movement would be impossible.
