The 17-million-acre Tongass is the largest national forest in the U. S. and one of the world's few remaining old-growth temperate rain forests. Salmon spawn in such abundance that the rivers run red, brown bears fish with their cubs just a few hundred yards from visitors, bald eagles fly overhead, and this area is the only home of the Alexander Archipelago wolf.
