Scientists created a computer model of a sagebrush grassland ecosystem. The model simulated growth and development of the ecosystem and the impacts of fire. The scientists used the model to predict whether occasional wildfires would benefit wildlife by creating more areas of grass and sagebrush on the landscape. A simplified version of the model is shown, along with a table showing the percentage of the landscape that supported each habitat type with and without occasional fires.
