Unlike land-based plants, water plants, especially those that are fully submerged, take in dissolved carbon dioxide and oxygen gas in the water instead of from the air and atmosphere. The stomata of water-based plants are often found on the upper side of their leaves, in order to have better access to atmospheric oxygen and carbon dioxide.
