Genetic engineering is a boon for production of pharmaceuticals and edible vaccines, drought and salinity tolerance in crops.  Plants were introduced to toxins derived from pests in their genome which when consumed by other pests results in their mortality therefore, acts as a mode of protection. Some pests has undergone adaptations against these pesticides which are induced in the genome of plants.This is the disadvantage of genetic engineering.  

Reduced effectiveness of pesticides is one of the disadvantages of using genetic engineering.

Recombinant DNA technology is the process by which the desired DNA fragment can be inserted to the desired host by using various enzymes. We can ligate DNA depending upon their compatibility. RDT has revolutionized agriculture by inserting the resistance genes against herbicides and insects into the crops like corn and soybean such that their production has been raised. This can be used to insert genes increasing the nutrition content of the crops.

This toxin can even survive human digestion and enter the bloodstream.When a crop is genetically modified, it loses its native nutritious identity. Also, genetically modified pesticides (herbicides) are used to protect the crop and eradicate pests. Pests can develop résistance against genetically modified pesticides and reduced effectiveness. This makes the development of more pest and affects the crop potentially that create future health problems.
