SA:V ratio is defined as the ratio between surface area exposed to surrounding relative to its body's volume. When the cell increases its volume, the SA:V ratio decreases, because the volume of the cell increases at faster rate than the surface surrounding the cell.

The cell division have roughly same SA:V ratio. The ratio is advantageous because the cell can preserve its surface area to volume ratio. The high ratio indicates that cell can diffuse more substances in and out of the cell at higher rate.
