How much of the earth’s surface do deserts cover and where do they occur? what are the four major types of desert?

Of the total Earth's surface, approximately 20 percent is covered with deserts. The majority of the desert takes place in the area band situated along the 30 degrees latitude in North and 30 degrees latitude in the south. Even some of the deserts are also situated in the regions of mountains.  

There are four prime kinds of desert found in the planet. These are:  

1. Subtropical deserts: They are the hottest deserts. They are found in Africa, Asia, North America, and South America.  

2. Coastal deserts: They occur in cool to warm regions along the coast like the Atacama Desert in Chile and Namib Desert in Africa.  

3. Cold winter deserts: They are also known as semi-arid deserts. The Great Basin, the Colorado Plateau, and the Red desert are all cold winter deserts.  

4. Polar deserts: They are found in the Antarctic and Arctic regions.  

Earth's majority surface is composed of land and water. 71% of Earth's surface is oceans and 29% percent is land. The 33% of the land surface is covered by desert.

Desert covers 33% of the land surface. The desert is made up of sand, stones, and gravels spread over large areas of the land. Based on the environmental conditions, deserts are classified into four types:

1. Hot and Dry deserts are also known as arid deserts. The temperature throughout the year is warm and dry. Sahara desert is a type of arid desert. Short woody trees, dung beetles, Mexican coyotes, and Bactrian camels are found in the arid desert.

2. Semi-arid deserts are cooler than arid deserts. This desert experiences cold weather and rains. These deserts are found in Asia and Europe.

3. Coastal deserts are found on the edges of oceans or seas. The Namib and Atacama deserts are examples of coastal deserts.

4. Cold deserts have extremely cold winters and hot summers. These deserts are found in plateau and flat areas. The Patagonian desert is a type of cold desert.

Therefore, the four types of deserts are coastal, arid, semi-arid, and cold.
