What makes enzymes specific for their substrates

Enzymes bind with chemical reactants called substrates. There may be one or more substrates for each type of enzyme, depending on the particular chemical reaction. In some reactions, a single-reactant substrate is broken down into multiple products.

Six amino acids have side chains that are polar but not charged. these are serine (ser), threonine (thr), cysteine (cys), asparagine (asn), glutamine (gln), and tyrosine (tyr). these amino acids are usually found at the surface of proteins, as discussed in the proteins 2 module.
