How has ocean exploration increased human understanding of aquatic ecosystems?

Discoveries of the different species of aquatic life increase the human understanding of the ecosystems under water from and the food web from the smallest phytoplankton to the largest but blue whale. Continued exploration of the deepest oceans, where life exists in complete darkness, also increases human understanding of how life exists in these regions. Humans can also understand  how their activities are affecting marine life  such as corals and how food, energy in the aquatic system and terrestrial systems is inextricably linked.
