In a national park, the population of moose increased between 1900 to 1930 due to the absence of predators and the large availability of grasses as a source of food. By 1935, only a few hundred moose remained due to a decrease in available food. In 1936, a forest fire destroyed a quarter of the forest, but the grasses remained and spread to the areas once dominated by trees.
