(Written Response) The CAT gene produces the catalase enzyme. The catalase enzyme is present throughout the body, but is highly
expressed in the blood and liver. The catalase enzyme breaks down hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into oxygen (O2) and
water (H20). If hydrogen peroxide is not broken down by catalase, hydrogen peroxide will react into reactive oxygen
species. These reactive oxygen species can damage DNA, prots, and cell membranes.
