The flat-tailed horned lizard is endemic to the Sonoran Desert ecosystem of the southwestern United States. Its habitat is generally confined to the fine sand of the desert scrub community. These lizards tend to live in open areas with sparse vegetation and are hunted by some species of birds, including loggerhead shrikes.
