In an ecosystem, organisms obtain energy by feeding on one another in a series of steps called FOOD CHAIN. This food chain begins with a set of organism called PRODUCERS, which possess the ability to absorb light energy from SUNLIGHT in order to begin the process.

However, organisms called CONSUMERS starts to feed on one another to obtain this energy, starting from the producer. According to the attached diagram, consumers include; HERBIVORES (feed directly on the producers/plants), CARNIVORES (feed on herbivores and other carnivores), OMNIVORES (feed on both plants and other animals), DECOMPOSERS (feed on dead plant and animal matter).

In a nutshell, organisms in the examples are called CONSUMERS because they feed on other organisms in an heterotrophic mode of nutrition.
