Mutations are sudden changes that may occur in a gene or chromosome. These changes may affect the way traits are inherited. If a mutation occurs in a body cell, such as a bone cell, the mutation affects only the organism that has it. If the mutation occurs in a sex cell, then it can be passed on to an offspring. Some mutations are helpful and can be desireable in an offspring.
