There also exist vertical water movements, such as the ascendant “upwelling” currents that transport cold water with nutrients from the bottom to the surface. Through trade winds at higher latitudes, surface water is diverted out to sea, making a place for the ascent of cold water from the deep. At tropical latitudes, descendent “downwelling” currents occur. Dense cold water from the poles descends as they get in touch with warmer water from lower latitudes.
