According to Oxford dictionary, commensalism refers to; "an association between two organisms in which one benefits and the other derives neither benefit nor harm. "

There are microorganisms that are usually found on the skin surface such as Bacillus subtilis. These organisms obtain their nutrients from the skin but does not harm the body in any way.

However, fungi such as Trichophyton rubrum and T. mentagrophytes cause athlete's foot and these also grow on the skin.

Commensalic organisms protect us from athletes's foot by competing for nutrient and space with these pathogenic fungi thereby decreasing the chances of survival of the fungi.
